Why the mention « do not swallow »
on the edible products ?

The European regulations say that « any substance or mixture designed to be swallowed […] is not considered as a cosmetic product but as a food product. Then nutritional information (like calorific values) must appear on the product.

However, the European Commission classifies some cosmetic products (lipstick, lip gloss, toothpaste, oil) as « borderline » products and imposes to companies (precautionary principle) to mention « do not swallow » on the packaging.

For example, on average, women ingest about 24 milligrams of lipstick per day, representing about 350 grams in a lifetime.

This allegation does not mean the product is not digestible. It only classifies the primary function of the product (cleaning, perfuming, changing the appearance, protecting or correcting scent). Even so, it mentions that an excessive consumption is not recommended.
